Biography:
William Joseph "Billy" Batson, otherwise known as Shazam, first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (February 1940), published by Fawcett Comics.
Billy is an orphan who, through various circumstances, is chosen by the ancient wizard Shazam to be his champion. By speaking the wizard's name – SHAZAM! – Billy is transformed into a powerful adult superhero with a vast array of abilities. These powers include superhuman strength, speed, flight, and invulnerability.
In some versions, "SHAZAM" is an acronym representing the sources of Billy's powers: Solomon (wisdom), Hercules (strength), Atlas (stamina), Zeus (power), Achilles (courage), and Mercury (speed). Although possessing a super-powered adult form, Billy retains the mind and personality of a child.
The character has been known as both Captain Marvel (the original name) and Shazam, the latter becoming the prevalent name, especially after DC Comics acquired the rights to the character.
